What even is stress anyway?

Conjure up the typical image of someone who is ‘stressed’ and what do you see?

Does this look familiar?

First we must understand that this image is a mere speck of reality – and that’s part of the problem.

When we think of stress we see images of super busy people trying to juggle the demands of a busy life. We often see a situation that’s unfamiliar. But in reality is it?

Stress is an utter epidemic and one that’s increasingly hard to avoid.

Subtle signs of stress often go un-noticed

Truth be told, we often don’t know we’re stressed. We’ve no idea.

Being ‘busy’ can be great.But it can also be a frenetic mess that’s almost impossible to keep up with.

Over time your mind can’t work at full speed. It’s too busy trying to deal with the past and the future.

Except, it’s not a real future. It’s one you’ve created.

The fictional messages we tell ourselves are incredibly harmful

We’ve been almost conditioned to live in the past and not the present. We also project all of this into the future.

It’s a nagging, annoying mentality that see’s you, ultimately, stressed. And it’s completely understandable.

What happens when you run an app (or game) on your phone that’s demanding on the processor? It heats up and the battery drains – fast.

Your body is doing exactly the same under stress. It’s simply not designed to run at this pace as often as we force it to do so.

Your heart rate, blood pressure and breathing changes. You become physically stressed, as well as mentally.

None of these physical symptoms are good, unless you’re under real, genuine threat – I’m talking life or death here.

Solutions? Living for now

There’s nothing stressful about the present moment.

So next time you’re stressed, stop. Pause. Breathe. Think.

Work out what the immediate threat is. Are you currently in danger? If so figure it out. If not sit with the now.
